Being young is associated with all the good things in life—beauty, hope, and energy. But youth also has negative associations—impulsiveness, trouble-making, and irresponsibility. This negative side seems to be what society focuses on more, which is why young people have mostly been considered as idle and difficult.

But when it comes to Generation Z—those born between 1996 and 2010—this stereotype doesn’t seem to apply anymore.

In Japan, for example, Gen Z-ers are less likely to buy on impulse, but take into consideration more a product’s true value. “They’re looking at the companies, not just the products,” Masahiko Uotani, CEO of Japanese cosmetics company Shiseido, told Bloomberg. “They’re asking, ‘Are they really delivering value to the society? Are they promoting diversity and inclusion?’”

Gen Z-ers are also more grounded than we’ve expected them to be. According to a recent survey by Bank of America, more than half of young adults aged between 18 and 23 said they were planning to buy a house within five years. And they’re not just saying it—they are willing to make sacrifices for it, including getting a second job and saving money for down payment instead of spending it on a vacation.

“Despite their young age, this group is pragmatic and actively planning for their future,” D.Steve Boland, head of Consumer Lending at Bank of America, told USA Today. “They have a clear vision how they are willing to help themselves in order to make it happen.”

Social issues are also at the center of concern of Gen Z-ers, who take themselves as a changing force of the world. In India, for example, young people who have just reached the voting age are eager to vote for a new leader who is capable of solving problems that matter the most to them, including pollution, unemployment and women’s safety.

As a Gen-Zer yourself, what is your plan for the future?

24. What do the underlined words “this stereotype” in paragraph2 refer to?

A. Being young is good.

B. Gen Z-ers are born after 1996.

C. The traditional poor impressions on the youth.

D. The associations with young people.

25. We can infer from the third paragraph that _____________.

A. Gen Z-ers in Japan are picky                    B. The Gen Z-ers are self-centered

C. The Gen Z-ers care little about products        D. The Gen Z-ers are wise when shopping

26. What’s Steve Boland’s attitude to the Gen Z-ers?

A. Approving.            B. Negative.            C. Indifferent.            D. Critical.

27. Which of the following words may best describe the Gen Z-ers?

A. Confident and independent.                    B. Visionary and responsible.

C. Persistent and down-to-earth.                    D. Active and creative.

C

Move over, helicopter parents! “Snowplow(扫雪机) parents” are the newest reflection of an intensive(强化的) parenting style that can include parents booking their adult children haircuts, texting their college kids to wake them up so they don’t sleep through a test, and even calling their kids’ employers.

Helicopter parenting, the practice of wandering anxiously near one’s children, monitoring their every activity, is so 20th century. Some rich mothers and fathers now are more like snowplows: machines moving ahead, clearing any difficulties in their children’s path to success, so they don’t have to suffer failure, frustration(挫折) or lose opportunities.

It starts early, when parents get on wait lists for excellent preschools before their babies are born and try to make sure their kids never do anything that may frustrate them. It gets more intense when school starts: running forgotten homework to school or calling a coach to request that their children make the team.

Rich parents may have more time and money to devote to making sure their children don’t ever meet with failure, but it’s not only rich parents practicing snowplow parenting. This intensive parenting has become the most welcome way to raise children, regardless of income, education, or race.

Yes, it’s a parent’s job to support the children, and to use their adult wisdom to prepare for the future when their children aren’t mature enough to do so. That’s why parents hide certain toys from babies to avoid getting angry or take away a teenager’s car keys until he finishes his college applications.

But snowplow parents can take it too far, some experts say. If children have never faced a difficulty, what happens when they get into the real world?

“Solving problems, taking risks and overcoming frustration are key life skills,” many child development experts say, “and if parents don’t let their children experience failure, the children don’t acquire them.”

28. What do we know about snowplow parenting?

A. It appeared before helicopter parenting.

B. It costs parents less than helicopter parenting.

C. It was a typical phenomenon of the 20th century.

D. It provides more than enough services for children.

29. What does the fourth paragraph mainly say about snowplow parenting?

A. Its cost.            B. Its benefits.            C. Its popularity.            D. Its ending time.

30. Why does the author mention parents’ taking away car keys?

A. To show teenagers are no better than babies.

B. To advise teenagers not to treat their cars as toys.

C. To advise parents not to buy cars for their teenagers.

D. To show it’s correct to help children when necessary.

31. What’s the possible result of snowplow parenting according to the experts?

A. Children lacking problem-solving ability in reality.

B. Children mastering more key life skills than parents.

C. Children gaining great success in every aspect of life.

D. Children meeting no problems or frustration after growing up.

D

The Great Depression that followed the stock market crash of 1929 saw hundreds of thousands of Americans out of work. In the years of great fear and depression, a lot of American citizens looked desperately to the federal government for assistance. Of all the programs designed by President Roosevelt when he took office in 1932, few were more criticized—or had more lasting impact—than the Work Projects Administration, better known as the WPA.

The intention of the WPA, which functioned from 1935 to 1943, was to design and administer public works projects to help relieve unemployment. The majority of these projects involved historic or artistic attempts. The WPA’s Writers Project, for example, was responsible not only for such practical works as state guidebooks but also for the collection of historically valuable oral histories. Over 2,900 of these records were collected in 24 states. They provide an irreplaceable firsthand account of people’s diets, customs, celebrations, and political and religious beliefs at the time.

The artworks created through the Federal Arts Project are one of the WPA’s most lasting achievements. Out-of-work painters, both famous and unknown, created paintings that beautified schools, libraries, and government buildings, WPA photographers traveled across the country recording the hardships of life on small rural farms. When the United States entered World War Ⅱ in 1941, WPA artists were enlisted to produce posters supporting the war effort. Many WPA artworks, including hundreds of small drawings picturing scenes of everyday life, still exist today.

32. When did the Work Projects Administration begin to work?

A. In1929.            B. In1932.            C. In1935.            D. In 1943.

33. What can be inferred about the WPA?

A. It was made up of several components.

B. It was President Roosevelt’s favorite project.

C. It played an important role during World War Ⅱ.

D. It trained artists before sending them out to work.

34. How does the author mainly develop this text?

A. By examples.                            B. By comparison.

C. Through a true story.                    D. Through a persuasive argument.

35. What’s the main idea of the text?

A. President Roosevelt designed the WPA.

B. The WPA helped relieve unemployment.

C. WPA artists painted pictures in schools and libraries.

D. The WPA produced many valuable and lasting works.

Guide for Teenagers

The teenage years can be tough, and it’s normal to feel sad every now and then. But if these feelings don’t go away or become so intense that you can’t handle them, you may be suffering from depression.    36

Try not to isolate yourself.

When you’re depressed, you may not feel like seeing anybody or doing anything. Just getting out of bed in the morning can be difficult, but isolating yourself only makes depression worse.   37   Spend time with friends, especially those who are active.

Keep your body healthy.

Making healthy lifestyle choices can do wonders for your mood. Ever heard of a “runners high”? Physical activity can be as effective as medications for depression, so get involved in sports, ride your bike, or take a dance class. Any activity helps!   38   As for food, make sure you’re feeding your mind with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Avoid alcohol and drugs.

You maybe try drinking or use drugs in an effort to escape from your feelings and get a “mood boost”, even if just for a short time. However, substance use can not only make depression worse, but can cause you to become more depressed.   39   You will need special treatment for your substance problem.

  40

Stress and worry can lead to depression. Talk to a teacher if exams or classes seem overwhelming. In addition, if you have a health concern you feel you can’t talk to your parents about, see a doctor. A health professional can help you approach your parents and guide you toward appropriate treatment. If you’re dealing with relationship, friendship, or family problems, talk to an adult you trust.

A. Even a short walk can be beneficial.

B. Turn to your parents for help.

C. As you get out into the world, you may find yourself feeling better.

D. In short, drinking and taking drugs will make you feel worse—not better—in the long run.

E. The more exercise you do, the healthier you will be.

F. Help is available and you have more power than you think.

G. Ask for help if you are stressed.

In the past three years, I have done everything I can to equip myself with that I have learnt from my teachers. Not only have I enjoyed the pleasure of study but also I have got closer to my dream. Anxious and pressure did discourage from me at times. Besides, with the encouragement of my teachers and classmates, I think I’ll make it.
